I have been involved with a Peer Support Programme for more than 6 years. This is a group of people, known locally as Stroke Support Volunteers, whose lives have been affected by stroke and who aim to help others in similar situations.
Recruited, vetted and trained by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust we visit stroke wards in Trust hospitals in Hexham, North Tyneside and Wansbeck where we speak to patients, families and carers about the social effects of stroke and what they might expect after discharge.
Feedback from the people we have talked to has been very positive and the healthcare professionals involved say they are also now seeing the advantages for future care. This video shows some of the volunteers talking about what they do and why they do it.
